Around 1900 Rheinberger knew of some 150 performances of his "Christoforus" both at home and abroad – a success story which only ended in the 20th century. With the present edition, which is based on the Carus Complete Edition of Rheinberger‘s works, this oratorio can once again find its place in the repertoire. Based on a libretto by his wife Fanny, Rheinberger clothed the famous legend of the bearer of Christ in a colorful garb of dramatic dialogue, ballad-like narrative and enthralling descriptions of nature.
