Composer Peter Schindler on this separate edition from “Perpetuum mobile”:
“O condicio misera”, a verse from text no. 26 in the Codex Buranus, is sung here by a male voice. The music and singing are dignified. The succinct, profound thoughts “Cum sit hora tibi mortis incognita” (The hour of your death is unknown to you) demonstrate the poetic power of the text.
The piece sounds like an address to humanity. The baritone's admonishing questions are aware of human weakness, but also offer a vision of redemption. Philip the Chancellor, the putative author of this text in the Codex Buranus, was famed for his sermons and poems. It is a sung Memento mori!.
