Friedrich Zehm, pupil of composition with Harald Genzmer, primarily wrote chamber music for music lessons, easy recital pieces and piano music. He was less interested in the practising of playing techniques, but rather in introducing the player to a contemporary tonal language. His compositional style includes traditional forms, concise themes, a tonally expandable framework, and a lively modern rhythm with dance-like elements. The Piano Book is a modern counterpart of Schumann's example. The little settings are characterized by delightful motivic and melodious ideas with different characters. Charming miniatures - not only for 'little ones'.
