「L'Allegro, il Pensieroso ed il Moderato」는 Handel의 가장 아름다운 오라토리오에 속하지만 공연되는 일은 지나치게 드뭅니다. 이 곡은 「메시아」보다 1년 앞선 1740년 초에 작곡되었으며, 마침 오라토리오가 부상하고 이탈리아 오페라가 쇠퇴하던 시기였습니다. 영어로 된 오라토리오이지만 이탈리아어 제목과 3부 구성은 여전히 오페라 전통을 가리킵니다. 이 작품은 알레고리적 논쟁으로 구상되어, 1부와 2부는 「Allegro」(명랑함)와 「Pensieroso」(우울함)라는 대조적인 정서를 그리고, 3부에서는 그 종합인 「Moderato」(moderatio)가 황금률로 제시됩니다. 훗날 「메시아」의 대본을 쓰게 되는 Charles Jennens는 대본을 위해 John Milton의 시 「L'Allegro」와 「Il Penseroso」를 손질하고, 새로운 3부 「Il Moderato」를 추가했습니다. 이 작품에는 서사적 줄거리가 없습니다. 대신 음악의 힘과 인간 조건의 온갖 면모, 즉 사교성, 유쾌함, 공동체 활동, 고독, 우울, 성찰에 초점을 맞춥니다. Handel은 시시각각 변하는 이 정서의 만화경에 생생한 음악어법으로 응답하며, 여기서 오블리가토 악기들이 중요한 역할을 맡습니다. 아리아는 기악 협주와 어우러지는데, 호른 독주가 등장하는 격렬한 사냥 장면에서든, 지저귀는 플루트가 함께하는 아늑한 밤 장면에서든, 소프라노/오보에와 테너/바순이 짝을 이루는 이중창 "As steals the morn"에서든 마찬가지입니다.
